Or my variations on those topics.

Having a few challenges in adding the pages and wondering if blogger has changed the process or if I've forgotten the process (don't think so but possible). Will see how it works out over time.

The above is why I made a modest change to the blog title.

Also need to delete the last post - need to verify it was properly posted to another blog before doing so.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000009619673116295.post-43185567516559906932022-07-30T20:19:00.002-07:002022-07-30T20:19:46.484-07:00A Thought Related to Gangster Games
Some time back I posted photos of my Prohibition Era gangster stuff - unpainted - with a layout for a town. Since then I've conceived of the notion of having the board set up with all of the buildings on the 'far' side of the street and the street itself being the 'gaming space' with just the sidewalk and parked cars and 'scatter terrain' on the nearest side of the board. Possibly do this so that there are three streets - the Main Street, one side street, and then the street on the far side of the table (with maybe an ally down the middle but not really included in the gaming space). Doing it that way can lead to some cool car chase scenes to add to the action, especially swerving around the corners. Will have to dig that stuff out and see how it might work.

In the meantime, I've kept my eye out for additional cars and trucks to add in and other items to 'decorate' the streets.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000009619673116295.post-52306552280082117892022-07-22T17:30:00.005-07:002022-07-22T17:30:44.655-07:00Some more photos of the game - and one extra

This was the Saturday morning Buffalo Hunting game - those are mostly Schleich models, roughly 1/54th scale - though they looked bigger to me. The game was at ConQuest Fresno in Clovis, California, USA. We had lovely weather - if you like 109 degrees Fahrenheit (but it is a 'dry' heat!).

This is one end of the 5' x 16' table. Yes, that is a volcano on the left and the ships on the right are 'government' forces but just a visual enhancement to the game which was a land battle. Just above the ships on the right you can see a sinking ship but you cannot see that between the good ships and it there are a bunch of men swimming in the water with sharks circling in and a maelstrom in the middle of it all. You can, however, see the figures used in the parade below.

This is the other end of the 5' x 16' table. There are over 100 total dead plus more than 50 figures in the water from the shipwreck.

These were the dead painted for the project game years ago along with the governor's on the left and some more command at the bottom. These are Native warriors - in this game standing in for Panamanian native peoples but could be Polynesian or Caribbean figures. For the most part, this command was newly painted though 8 stands were already painted with some rework to ensure they matched to the newer figures. Notice the color difference on the bases for the natives - yet I used the exact same sand. The difference was that I used the wet paint for the natives but clear glue for the rest of the commands. The natives will be used in non-pirate games for sure.

Just another of the sixteen total painted commands. Four stands at the bottom left are part of the newly painted - easy to spot because no tufts of any kind. For this game I adopted what must be termed Rush Painting. In the two weeks ahead of the game I painted and readied 331 15 mm figures for the game - based and textured bases. While that sounds impressive - and on one level it is - I need to go back and do some finish work and touch up on a lot of the figures to bring them up to my not so high standard but better than they are now. The native warriors were in the group of 331 but they got fully finished except for adding the flower tufts to define each unit within the command. I completed 19 new units, two of female pirates to add to four already completed units of armed women; four stands of unarmed females to complete a sixth unit for that command (all units had been in four stand units of twelve and got rearranged in June into six stand units); two new units of pirates; eight new units of government troops in white, five new and three where I had to paint two figures each to bring to 18 as above, and four completely new units of natives and then two additional stands of natives to bring the previously done eight stands to two units (not pictured above but I have one more unit of natives that is primed and ready but not yet painted - not sure how I will slot that into the collection). So, Rush Painting means 'good enough' for the game but not good enough for long term.

All totaled, including the men in the water with the sharks, there are 2,016 figures pictured above (2,013 if the loss stand doesn't turn up - turned up). I may add or replace more figures on the command front but I will not be adding more commands - I'd guess I have the largest collection of painted pirates with opponents in the miniatures hobby; if not, I'd love to hear about someone who has more (multiple people combining for a game doesn't really count, now does it?).

For certain, if I run this scenario again, I will use a 5' x 24' or so table to give more open battle space between the two ends with all the visual appeal. We had quite a traffic jam that created challenges for the game. However, despite that, the Victory for me was to get everything that was painted onto the table - except for many of the casualty figures which were supposed to be used with one dead for every stand lost. Not nearly enough game action shots above but enough for now. All these photos were taken using my phone, before I packed it all way I used my iPad to take a lot of photos but those aren't loaded to this computer yet. Might add them, might not.

Now, for the "more below": I realized that I can use a number of the units in this collection for an imagination which I will call Punctillia - a nation that prides itself on never being late for battle. Well, there was that one time; oh, and that other time. I guess it is that they take pride in almost never being late for a battle.

When I get those three more commands painted, there will be 19 total commands of six units. Hmm, with that one more native unit and those three "units" of specialty figures, I only need two more commands to round it out to 20 commands. In some instances, rather than talus I will use rail ballast - it is what I have on hand in sufficient quantity and variety of colors.

As a for instance, I have constituted four units of a similar nature each with six stands where previously there had been six units with four stands each. For this grouping, I made piles of white talus on each stand the group identifier and then each unit is further defined by different colored flower tufts: white, yellow, red, and blue.

What I like most about this approach is that it is readily visible without having to look at the lettering on the base of the figures and without any visually distracting labels.

I only have 72 more units to finish (that is 432 more bases to go)!

Then there are the units I need to get painted to add to the mix - but those might be easily differentiated by how the figures get painted, well some of the units. The native units will require a bit more finesse but might still be able to use the painted colors for some to differentiate, maybe.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000009619673116295.post-56647013289898371632022-05-03T22:57:00.001-07:002022-05-03T23:01:13.281-07:00Pirate Harry Doorknockin's Raid on Paynomore
Putting on a pirate game at a convention in July so back to work on some figures - need 48 figures to round out 8 partial units, already painted, as part of a Grand Reorganization to fit the collection to my rules of choice per my own lights, essentially going from 4 stands to a unit up to 6 stands to a unit with some special units up to 8 stands. Also need a couple of new units of a special nature and more dead figures and then there will be few a 'bonus' figures for the game. No need to buy anymore figures, though, have plenty on hand, more than needed actually. Also need to finish a bunch of native figures as part of the game, figures that will double for a Caribbean setting and the Pacific Islands at times. Might try to finish some of the native canoes but that is a wait and see part of the project.

I might offer some of the surplus figures as prizes during the game. Not sure what I will do with there overly Napoleonic marine units. Will still have a smattering of figures in out-of-period hats like fore-and-aft naval hats but I will just consider those fellows to be trend setters well ahead of their time.

I've got a bit over ten weeks to paint about 240-250 figures which is well within my range of productivity, more if I do the canoes but not too many more, a couple of dozen figures or so at most.

Will also be adding some terrain. Need to order a couple of walls for my star fort model to create my variation of Panama. And going to build a rope bridge across a canyon between two native villages. Otherwise, I should have what I need. Though I might paint up a few extra buildings and, if enough time, build some better jungle trees.

The coolest part is the game will put almost all of my painted pirate collection figures into a game - not a ship game, a land game. May be a couple of ships as 'decor', maybe with some boats landed, but only as decor, not part of the game.

Don't have the final tally but once the 'new' stuff is painted, there will be a bit over 1900 figures including the multi-purpose natives.

And looks like I will take one unit out of the pirate collection and switch it over to my western collection as temperance women and a half dozen as bar girls or such.

To the devil drink a toast!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000009619673116295.post-64682552832232382122022-01-22T10:14:00.001-08:002022-01-22T10:14:28.584-08:00Alive and kicking
Just a quick note to show I am still here - old operating system wasn't allowing access and could not update but have new computer. Not really recent, been awaiting work for a couple of busily distracted years, but here is a 'new' pirate ship not yet removed from its stand and with its keel still in place.

However, the timing of the convention is not good being on Easter weekend. And then there is my desire to turn the collection in a different direction with one principle town - with a fort - and maybe a smaller piratical lair. Also, I am seriously thinking of reducing the size of the collection though I do have a couple of hundred additional pirates to finish painting. Last, there is the fact that my focus is on other collections these days and I don't want to derail that forward progress. Time will tell.

And, yes, I have regained access to this - and other - blogs that got 'lost' for a time; don't know why just couldn't access it. Seems fixed for now and that is good.

Oh, and I've added a very nice pirate ship to my collection I'll have to try and get a picture of and post here.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000009619673116295.post-10161309599354025312017-11-29T22:44:00.001-08:002017-11-29T22:44:04.304-08:00Tick-tockTime marches on and little progress - though the figures are primed and based and ready for painting but who knows the when as far as when it will happen. Been working on other projects with what little time I've had for the hobby the last year or so. AWI, Old West, and now the renewed Boxer Rebellion project have soaked up most of my limited time. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000009619673116295.post-35751674313321930602016-07-31T21:31:00.001-07:002016-07-31T21:38:11.607-07:00Progress!Well, a small bit of progress and a nice acquisition. I have a new pirate ship and a smaller ship to join my fleet. It is another two mantle piece ships to be converted to semi-water line. I've also decided to go ahead and finish painting the last of the pirate figures in need of painting (I hope!).

This adds up to 358 pieces but that includes one horse and five pieces of artillery, 20 casualty figures, and one mermaid (not quite sure how to incorporate her into the games but what the heck, she makes one stand three figures. I have four more mermaids and four sea witches or whatever they are but I just use them as game markers with a monotonic paint scheme).

I did the final sorting tonight and allocated bases for the figures. Now just a matter of cleaning them, priming them, and pre-basing them before painting and texturing the bases. And then sealing.

Oh, I've also added a Vauban fortress and a variety of structures as stated earlier for my pirate town (or towns). I will be basing the towns and maybe building some town walls. The fortress will be on two levels, a lower level somewhat damaged and the upper level in tact. Rather than keep this as multiple pieces I'm just going to make it a single permanent model on a rocky base - and thus be able to get rid of the 'part' lines between pieces. But I will be sure and leave a means of access for any attacking force to use!

So, progress on the pirate front, if small. And I worked on the storage closet for these and other items today, instead of the floor and one shelf there are now a total of five shelves so a lot easier to get to things to work on them.

Progress is good. Photos in due course.

(Looks like those hacking slavs are at it again, 245 visits from Russia in the last month. Post-commie pusillanimous bastards. Though if there are any legitimately interested folk from Russia you are, of course, most welcome.)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000009619673116295.post-637953642982841682015-11-28T07:39:00.001-08:002015-11-28T07:39:19.424-08:00Pirate FuturesNo, sorry, this is not an investment opportunity.

Rather, rereading about one of the mega games, I've made a firm decision. Either a pirate game will be focused on sea action. Or it will be focused on land action. Trying to do both seems to dilute the effect. Besides, if there is ship action, no one seems interested in the land action. But I'm not giving up entirely on having landing actions. Just have to make that a critical component of victory/success in a game.

And I am also working on improving the towns, probably incorporating into fewer towns to have two or three larger towns. I'm thinking fewer factions might work better.

I do have some more pirates still to paint including an all female crew. But that is all down the road a bit as I continue to focus on finishing the French and Indian War and get started on the Old West. (And maybe make some adjustments in the ACW arena.)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000009619673116295.post-55754777964928780992015-04-24T20:12:00.001-07:002015-04-24T20:12:21.393-07:00Yes, still here.Haven't visited in a while which means I haven't posted in a while. Found some weird comments in need of deleting. One day, like the Cherokee Nation, I will return to piratical postings. Busy in other areas of life of late.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000009619673116295.post-89459615075763418312014-09-01T17:41:00.000-07:002015-04-26T08:41:25.953-07:00The rumors of my disappearance......are not true. Just been busy with other things. But piracy is still a part of my gaming life. And, since I noticed it today, seems this little blog has passed 13,000 views. No great shakes compared to some, but not too shabby. Keep enjoying and when I can I will post something new more interesting than this minor missive.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000009619673116295.post-38165525562986120042014-03-15T08:52:00.001-07:002014-03-15T08:54:41.314-07:00Thought I'd Abandoned You, Did You?Well, no, I haven't. Just recently, courtesy of a sale, I ordered up some more pirate figures - and need to order a few more packs from a different supplier to finalize the acquisitions - from Rebel Minis. And with these new additions to my collection, I have now finalized the organization of my pirates and their opponents. Going forward, I've put together a six player game (that can quite easily accommodate up to twelve players) that will be a land based event with one large town defended against raiding pirates. All of those cool ships are going to be relegated to table decorations - though the option of ship-to-ship actions doesn't go away. I just want to make my "Base Pirate Event" a land warfare affair.

There is also the important change of adapting a published set of rules for my games rather than trying to create my own. That is an option fraught with a diverse range of challenges. So, I've settled on using Rank and File (from Crusader Publishing) as my rules of choice. And not just for pirates, neither, but for just about everything I own. Might be bit of a challenge to adapt to Viking era and Robin Hood, but not so much for my Four And A Half Musketeers since that isn't going to be a one-on-one swashbuckling event.

Not sure when I'll get the new figures painted or the hundred figures already in process that weren't ready in time for the previous outings, but they will get done. This year my primary focus is on getting my French and Indian war figures 100% done. Big challenge. Biggest distraction is going to be my American Revolution collection. That last is my favorite period and it sort of 'knocked me upside the head' that I really need to get it into shape for gaming. Or at least a small portion of it. Will take a long time to get that collection complete and fully on the table, even with highly focused effort. Actually, doubt it will ever be 'fully' on the table since it is designed to cover the northern, main army, and southern theaters of that conflict - and provide for a rich and diverse fictional campaign based on history but adjusted for unpredictability.

Too many periods, too many figures, not enough time!

(oh, the new organization will be posted under the pirate tab on my Main Blog, SteepleChasing Zebras - but not right now, chores beckon)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000009619673116295.post-10245803122654345492013-11-05T05:48:00.001-08:002013-11-05T05:48:08.478-08:00Photos? Yes. But where? See below. Here is the link to my other blog where you can find a post on the front page with lots and lots of photos - including many of my two pirate games:

I have settled on my scenario basics for my all sea game on Saturday at the ConQuest Avalon convention but weeks away now. It will only use 8 ships divided between pirates and two nations. And they'll all be hunting for an infamous pirate captain who was marooned in hopes of getting him to reveal the location of the fabled treasure he is rumored to have buried. Hope to get photos of the game to post here. Doubtful, in the extreme, I will have time to add any figures in because of The Great Distraction.

However! That distraction is quite worthy of your notice. I am working to enclose our covered patio and will have a space for a permanently setup game table at 5' x 12'. Also means my car will get to dwell within the garage over winter. A needed thing.

Land Ho!

That is my Sunday game at ConQuest Avalon, an all land game where all, or at least a lot, of those painted figures will get to strut there stuff. Looking forward to seeing how that works out. And I'm not providing any advanced intelligence regarding that game.

Avast there, you lubbers, hoist the main brace, we're in for a blow, sure!

I do hope to add some figures to the mix that didn't make into the previous events. I might even add some more planned purchases. Depends on time availability. Stay tuned for more information as it develops.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000009619673116295.post-36463147943124962472013-08-02T21:25:00.004-07:002013-08-02T21:25:59.356-07:00An opinion, nothing more. The folks at r-e-f-e-r-e-r.com are bunch of mindless morons! Please tell this to everyone on the planet. Everyone. But only if you share the same opinion that I do. What a bunch of i-d-i-o-t-s!

Sorry to those of you who actually enjoy this site but these creeps are spiking the stats that help me know whether or not to keep the site up or take it down. The web, for all the good things it allows, also lets those with criminal intent (not saying about above listed doofuses) to try harder. And it puts the megaphone in the hands of some loud mouthed anus-orificed folk. And its always twenty or thirty of dip-manures shouting nonsense at once. What a lot of banal nothingness.

But, hey, at least you know I'm still here and minding the "store." Happy Pirate Gaming to those of you who actually belong here.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000009619673116295.post-59689579799139132842013-05-11T21:38:00.001-07:002013-05-11T21:40:43.659-07:00Congratulations!To who, I have no idea. But someone in the last day brought the viewer total to 10,000 and now it's above that number. Or at least there have been that many page views. Nice to know there is steady traffic here. Must have put a few things of interest.

Were the budget in different shape, I would have placed an order during Rebel Minis recent spring sale. Oh, well. Can't be spending money needed for bills on toys. All that will improve soon.

Hope you all keep enjoying what you find here. There are still some things to finish painting. And I haven't forgotten about someday posting some rules here but they need a little tweeking and I need some serious time to do what needs to be done to make that happen. Not soon, but eventually.
In company with 10,000 views, this makes the 100th post. Have no idea what that means.

Now get off your computer and go hook up with a real live friend and play with some miniatures. Or at least paint some!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9000009619673116295.post-20552277838599340102013-04-24T21:06:00.001-07:002013-04-24T21:06:31.318-07:00Some one else's riverHaving recently completed a river for some one else's game, I think this link provides a nice contrast. While the period is a little earlier and the scale larger, hope you enjoy following the link. Very nice work. Here is the link:

Hopefully my next river project approaches closer to his quality. I'm fine with what I created but more time would have allowed better work, especially some touch up along the banks.

This is a shot of the table during set up showing the river and ridge I built for Mike's game - or at least those pieces being used for this event. I built something that will have utility beyond this event (scheduled for several outings at different conventions this year). Beyond the ridge line is the Flying Saucer crash site, clearly still being built. Aaron, the modeler has his work cut out to have it ready in less than two weeks but should be pretty cool when he gets it done.
